Men, Meditation, and Other Yoga-Related Practices
Throughout their lives, men tend to engage in more arduous labors than women. Construction jobs are generally held by men, as are heavy lifting jobs. They have been given the title of “the stronger sex” and act accordingly due to a single reason: society. Men develop more muscle than women due to their genetic make up, but this social label also desensitizes men; they are looked down on by many if they cry publicly or show any other emotions that sensitize them and take away from their masculinity. Men do face pressures in life that are different from those that women face. They are expected to be head of a family, to bring in most or all of the income to support their family, and remain strong in all types of difficult situations.
This male persona that must be upheld at all times grows tiring, and may lead to future breakdowns, leading many men to feel isolated. Attending a regular yoga class is a great stress release that serves as exercise as well. In the past, some men thought yoga to be an unmanly practice meant for women, but that stereotype has been lifted due to the exponential growth of the practice in recent years. Men are encouraged to participate in yoga classes and have the chance to meet other men that share the same viewpoint.
Meditation allows a person to train their mind to view the world differently. By understanding one’s own thoughts and the activity of the subconscious, changes can be made. From there, one has the ability to strengthen his relationships and become more comfortable being an individual rather than a small portion of an entire sex.
Most men enjoy physical exertion such as weight lifting and strength training and the asanas are a healthy way to allow their bodies to regain balance. Yoga strengthens the body and works muscles that may never be worked otherwise. The asanas also promote flexibility and the loosening of tight body parts which allows the body to become aligned. Strength training is more effective when paired with yoga, and pranayama allows a person to have an evenly flowing mind while involved in this rigorous activity. Meditation allows one to keep their focus on even the most difficult of tasks.
The practice of yoga has been proven effective in producing long term results for men’s health. Yoga can be used as a tool to effectively battle diseases that occur later in life such as prostate-related illnesses and impotence. The benefits of yoga are numerous, and men should consider taking up the practice if they wish to lead healthier, more fulfilling life.
