Menopause comes from Greek words and literally means cessation of the month. According to studies, the average age of natural menopause in the U.S. is 51.4. This range was taken from 44-55 years of age. Premature menopause can occur as early as before age 40. This occurs in 2% of women.
Perimenopause refers to the years before menopause and can go as far back as 10 years beforehand. Menopause will start “officially” one month and one year after the last menstruation. Doctors consider menopause to start a year after the first month you miss your period to make sure it is not an irregular period.
The cause is due to the levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones in the body. The levels start to decrease.
Doctors explain that women around 38 years of age start to release eggs to the ovaries in an accelerated way. This may explain why women reach their sexual peak just about that time too.
Doctors estimate that women are born with 400,000 eggs. The accelerated process that starts at age 38 leaves women with only 5,000 to 10,000 eggs left at age 40. At around 52 years of age, all the remaining eggs are gone along with the surrounding cells that produce estrogen and progesterone.
The reproduction hormones start to work with less effectiveness and coordination. The brain receptors in charge of reducing anxiety do not receive the regular amounts of the progesterone hormone, which is why some women feel anxious or depressed. Although every person is different and will experience things differently, sometimes deeper or no symptoms at all, here are some of the most common symptoms:
- Hot flashes
- Mood swings
- Lower sexual desire
- Insomnia
- Vaginal dryness
- Menstrual irregularities
The good news is that Yoga and meditation balance the neurological system balancing the hormone levels in the body. This will transform into a total well-being, not only physical but also mental. It allows you to connect with yourself at a deeper level, balance the emotions, and feel good.
