Practice
“The Jivamukti Yoga Centers are places for spiritual gathering that offer vigorous Hatha Yoga classes with an emphasis on the Source teachings from such ancient texts as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Upanishads”. (www.jivamuktiyoga.com)
Each class focuses on a theme, which is explored through Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to yoga scriptures, music, asana sequencing, pranayama and meditation.
Jivamukti’s practice is vinyasa style and classes can be physically intense and challenging and intellectually stimulating.
The asana practice itself demands that the practitioners come face to face with their physical, mental and emotional limitations. These limitations are manifested as tightness in the body and as negative thoughts and emotions such as anger, jealousy and fear.
By dedicating every inhalation and exhalation to overcoming these negative tendencies, the practitioner steps forward on the mat motivated by a commitment to love. In time, students develop the courage to move fearlessly through their own psychological and physical limitations. Spiritually elevating music played in the classroom is a constant inspiration and a reminder of the goal, which is yoga or “the union with the Divine”.
